Palms Are Like Children, They Get Sick

Anyone who has children or have raised children knows the importance of the following fact!  Seeing a doctor on a regular basis, receiving scheduled vaccinations, eating a balanced diet and receiving supplemental vitamins is critical in the development of healthy children.  Palms are the “children of our landscape”.

It does not take long after you have planted your palms, hired someone to install them, or inherited a property with existing palms, to realize this is just the beginning of your relationship and investment.  As a general rule “the more expensive the palm, the greater care required”.  When you think of South Florida, you think of Palms.  But in reality, most of the pretty palms and most expensive palms are not native to South Florida and require special care,  Initially, these palms look good for a year or two.  These palms begin to decline.  To the untrained eye, these symptoms often go unnoticed for many years until one day the palm appears sick.  At this point, corrective treatment is often too late.  Unlike, trees and shrubs, palm fronds do not regenerate.  The unsightly fronds remain on the palm until shed.  It may take more than a year before the palm looks completely healthy.

Palms may suffer from some of the following pest problems: aphids, mites, scales, beetles, mealy bugs and moths.

Palms may suffer from some of the following disease problems: leaf spot, graphiola, leaf skeletonizer, lethal yellowing and ganoderma.

Palms may suffer from some of the following nutrient deficiencies: manganese, iron, magnesium, zinc and potassium.
